Heavy Towing Where Four Interstates Meet
Heavy Duty Towing Gary answers the phone 24/7 for tow and recovery calls on big units in Gary, Indiana and the towns around it. That means semis and tractor-trailers, box trucks, buses, RVs, dump trucks and heavy equipment. If you are stranded on a shoulder, call (219) 529-2610 now. The sections below explain what to have ready and how this corridor works.
What to have ready when you call
- The road and direction of travel, and the mile marker or nearest exit.
- The unit type and weight class: tractor-trailer, straight truck, bus, RV, dump truck or equipment.
- Whether it is loaded and with what. Tell us if the cargo is hazmat.
- What is wrong: breakdown, flat, no air, wreck, rollover, jackknife, stuck or off the road.
- Who is paying: driver, fleet, insurer or broker.
Dispatch gives you an honest arrival estimate on the call. We do not quote a number before we know where you are and what the unit needs.
Four interstates in one small area
Gary is on the southern shore of Lake Michigan, in Lake County, Indiana. Interstate 94 enters Indiana from Illinois at Munster and runs east through Hammond, Gary and Portage. For its first stretch it shares pavement with Interstate 80 and US 6 on the Borman Expressway. Interstate 90 follows the Indiana Toll Road, a 156-mile road that runs from the Illinois line to the Ohio line. Interstate 80 leaves the Borman at Lake Station and continues east on the Toll Road. Interstate 65 begins at US 12 and US 20 in Gary and runs south through Merrillville and Crown Point toward Indianapolis and Louisville, on an 887-mile route that ends in Mobile, Alabama.
Heavy traffic, not much room
The stretch of the Borman from Kennedy Avenue to Cline Avenue carried about 163,912 vehicles per day in a 2010 count, among the heaviest in Indiana. When a truck breaks down or crashes there, the scene is tight and the traffic does not stop. Traffic control, a plan for the wrecker, and the right equipment all matter. Heavy recovery here often means a heavy wrecker with enough winch capacity, sometimes a rotator for uprighting, and a clear plan for where the unit will go.
Steel, the lakefront and the port
U.S. Steel's Gary Works sits on the lakefront, with its main entrance at the north end of Broadway, and Interstate 90 was built between downtown Gary and the plant. Farther east, State Road 249, reached from Interstate 94, serves the Port of Indiana. Steel, bulk loads, flatbeds and heavy equipment move through this corridor all day, and so do the units that break down under them.
Lake Michigan weather
Snow here is shaped by the lake. Gary averages about 25 inches of snow a year, with January the heaviest month at about 7.8 inches. Lake-effect bands can form along the length of Lake Michigan and drop heavy snow on a narrow area, and Gary is one of the places that can be hit. The record low is -22 F. Fuel gelling, dead batteries, air line freeze-ups and slide-offs go up with the cold. We dispatch for all of them.
Who calls us
Owner-operators and company drivers on the Toll Road and the Borman. Dispatchers and fleet managers who need a unit moved and a clear invoice. Bus companies with a vehicle down. Construction firms with a dump truck or a piece of equipment that cannot move under its own power. RV owners with a coach that is too big for a normal tow. Insurers and police who need a heavy wrecker on scene.

Common Questions
What do I need to tell dispatch when I call?
Give the road and direction, the mile marker or nearest exit, the unit type and weight class, whether it is loaded and with what, what is wrong, and who is paying. Say right away if the cargo is hazmat.
How much does a heavy duty tow cost in Gary?
Published rate sheets from other jurisdictions show heavy tow hook-ups around $450 plus about $9.50 to $10 per mile, and recovery with a heavy wrecker around $350 to $850 per hour. Storage runs about $65 to $100 per day. Your written invoice estimate is the price.
Do you answer at night and on holidays?
Yes. Dispatch answers 24/7. After-hours charges can apply, and they appear on the written estimate.
Can you tow a loaded semi, or do you have to unload first?
It depends on weight, damage and where it is. A loaded unit can often be towed. A heavily damaged or overweight unit may need a load transfer first. Dispatch will ask about the cargo and weight before sending equipment.
Do you handle bus, RV and equipment calls?
Yes. Buses, motorhomes, dump trucks and heavy equipment all need the right wrecker or trailer. Tell dispatch the make of unit, the weight and where it is stuck.
Who pays for the tow?
That depends on the situation. The driver, the fleet, a broker or an insurer may pay. Tell dispatch who it is, and we can send the written estimate and invoice in the form they need.
